My name is Still Moe Ron

The download links in the last post didn't include the "get around port 80 port forwarding" that I have to do to serve http on Verizon's Fios. Please try again!

You can download it here:
From Brian's Mac Mini
Or you can get the torrent

And to make matters worse, I port forwarded to the laptop I carry with me everywhere instead of the desktop that always stays here serving (nothing). Please do try again.

RailsLive Version 0.3.1

I cranked out another version this morning, on my never-ending quest to make the RailsLiveCD a great introduction to the Rails universe. I think this one is ready for the public. If anyone wants an advance release copy, shoot me an email and I'll put you on the beta list.

Ingredients List:

So Far:

Rails 1.2.3
SQLite3
Ruby 1.8.5
RubyGems 0.9.2
Flexmock
Mocha
TestSpec
Piston
Subversion
Firefox

Of course there is much more, but this is the base. I have a lot of fun putting these releases together. The little touches are what make it worthwhile, like adding Firefox extensions and bookmarks.

RailsLiveCD 0.3.0

The new RailsLiveCD features SQLite3 (and only SQLite3) as a database engine. Why? Well because it's really damned unreliable getting MySQL to be running on a LiveCD. It only works some of the time. Like maybe 3.2% of the time. So in keeping with my new simplification plans, I'm installing and configuring the 0.3.0 release to use only SQLite3. And it's quite zippy, I might add.

Opinionated LiveCD?

We all know that Ruby on Rails is opinionated. The first two releases of the RailsLiveCD tried to be all things to all people. I am coming to the realization that it is impossible to keep that dream. My dream and intention for the RailsLiveCD is for it to serve as an introduction to the world of Rails for people who might not be inclined to do lots of installing. It's also nice that it serves as a portable development environment for people who want to bring their environment with them (add a USB key for storing code and you can work from any computer!). But everybody seems to want RailsLiveCD to support their specific way of working on Rails. I have to tell you that it's exhausting. What I'm going to focus on is providing one GOOD way of working on Rails, even if it isn't the best, even if it doesn't involve Emacs and even if it isn't perfect. By providing one good way to do Rails, I'm hoping I can open the door for more adoption. If you like it, there's an INSTALL button right on the desktop. If you don't, well there's always the Synaptic Package Manager, you can tweak it to your little heart's desire. Or eject the CD and throw it in the trash. Either way, you'll have investigated Rails a bit, which makes me happy.

The new version of RailsLiveCD will be 0.3.0 and will be released in time for RailsConf2007.

New Home

Mephisto is cool. And Pretty! But I'm a busy guy and I've just got to get practical about my time. So I've moved all my blogs over to Blogger, where they're significantly easier to maintain. When Mephisto whined about something in my liquid template this afternoon I realized it was time to Get Real. The old site is gone, but it served us well. Welcome to the new RailsLiveCD site. Just in time for RailsConf2007 and RailsLiveCD version 0.3.x!
